Widgets, gadgets, and Klips, oh my!

Dec 21, 2006, by awille

Just in time for the holidays, CNET's Peter Butler picked up KlipFolio 4 Beta, and shares his thought on why he likes where it's headed.

"Klipfolio takes a minimalist and highly functional approach to managing and presenting the information that you want, with individual “Klips” that can be dynamically resized and are easily personalizable.

...most of the coolest features are on the back-end, enabling developers to do more with their creations. Among the new additions, Klips can now present maximized images, which has already resulted in the deadly time killer, Flickr Explore."

Read the entire story, and let Peter know what you think.

KlipFolio 4 Beta Released!

Dec 14, 2006, by peterM

We're thrilled to announce that the first public beta of KlipFolio 4 is available for download! This is the most significant update to KlipFolio since version 0.8 was released (almost exactly) 5 years ago.

What's new in KlipFolio 4? For starters, you can now put your Klips into a sidebar. But it's not like other sidebars. With KlipFolio you can make your sidebar really, really small and still pack lots of Klips into it. And you can move it to the top of your screen and create a Klip Strip. If you want to, you can have a bunch of strips and a bunch of sidebars onscreen at the same time---great for über displays and multi-monitor setups.

KlipFolio 4 also gives you more control over how you organize and arrange your Klips. Klips can now be put into groups, and these groups can be moved independently of other Klips. Also, when you move Klips around or resize them, other Klips get out of the way. We call it Liquid Klips, and it's pretty cool.

There's so much more that's new in 4 that you're best off just going ahead and downloading it. Make sure you add some of the cool 4.0-only Klips, like the new system monitors, slideshow Klips and webcams.

KlipFolio.com: Better UTF-8 Character Support

Dec 06, 2006, by markp
Over the last several years we've watched KlipFolio go global and when we built the new KlipFolio.com one of our goals was to improve the way languages where handled. To that end we made Klips and tags language-sensitive, making the site more usable to our global user base. But up until recently even if KlipFolio.com knew that a Klip was Russian, it wasn’t able to properly display its title or description using Russian characters (or any non-latin1 characters, for that matter).

We're happy to say that we've recently made some changes:

  • uploaded Klips should now appear properly on KlipFolio.com
  • users can enter tags using any characters they like
  • site comments, user profiles, and other form-driven data appear properly

While you still might see the odd '?' character floating around KlipFolio.com, we're working hard to internationalize the entire site.

Special note to Klip Authors:

Please note that uploaded Klip files are assumed to be in UTF-8 unless they have a proper XML declaration which specifies the Klip's encoding, for example:

If you upload a Klip and it doesn’t display properly on KlipFolio.com, make sure your “encoding” attribute is correct -- it matches the actual encoding of your Klip file -- and re-upload your Klip.
