Building a dashboard with Excel data in Klipfolio

You’re probably thinking: Leave Excel to create a dashboard with my data? Jeez, that’s inconvenient.

Don’t let this initial scare stop you from creating the visualizations you want to see.

Klipfolio enables users to visualize their data in a dynamic and interactive dashboard. Essentially, we allow you to keep your data on the backend, so you only see clean and concise visualizations on the front end.

The simple Excel functions you know, in the interactive dashboard you need

Excel has long been many company's go-to data organization platform. Most people know the basics of the program and for many it’s the easiest way to record data.

So why connect Excel with Klipfolio? Klipfolio enhances Excel's data organization capacity by allowing you to beautifully visualize your data so that you can understand it in a glance and more easily act on what the data is telling you.

I’m not going to lie, there is a learning curve to our product. But the good news is that your experience in Excel will cut that curve in half. Here are some of the things you're already familiar with in Excel that you can look forward to using in Klipfolio.

Cells

The cells you’re familiar with using to organize your data in an Excel spreadsheet are virtually the same as the ones you’ll be using in Klipfolio’s Editor.

When you connect Excel to Klipfolio, your data stays the same—right where you left it. And another cool thing is that if you want to create a pivot table we’ve eliminated almost all of the steps to do it.

Just grab the visualization from the right hand menu in the Editor, and select the data you want to transform.

Tabs

Navigating through your data isn’t always easy, especially when you have multiple spreadsheets in one file.

Since you already know how to setup your data with tabs, Klipfolio takes this capability one step further by allowing you to organize each component of your KPIs in three simple tabs: data, properties, and indicators.

This way you won’t find yourself in a sea of functions, but can still get around the way you know best.

Functions

You’ve probably spent a lot of time memorizing functions in Excel. We have good news! Your time has not gone to waste!

Klipfolio manipulates your data with similar functions to the ones you know and love—array, count, group, slice and sort, among others.

We've made it easier to make these functions manipulate your data in the exact ways you want. And the best part? You won’t have to keep applying functions; you can setup Klipfolio to automatically update your data or you can simply do it yourself without creating new spreadsheets.

How to share and view your Excel dashboard

I don’t know about you, but static spreadsheets don’t exactly match my office decor. And screenshots of graphs don’t emphasize the important KPIs in my reports and presentations.

What’s essential to remember is that data is meant to be shared. What’s the point of analytics if there are no conclusions drawn from the numbers?

A dashboard is the best way to share your metrics and KPIs. When you can clearly see what’s going on, making important decisions or executing new projects becomes a routine part of your work day, not just another monthly or quarterly meeting on your calendar.

SharePoint, PowerPoint and Keynote

There's a certain joy that comes from being able to pull your data visualizations out of the primary platform and display them in another for others to see. Nothing crushes this joy quite like formatting issues.

Whatever slideshow platform you prefer, Klipfolio offers a way to display your data in a presentable, clean visualization. You can add in a live link of a dashboard to pull up during your board meeting, or you can save each metric individually as an image or PDF to paste right in.

TV dashboard

As I’ve said before, data is meant to be shared. Many offices and businesses are displaying their dashboards on a TV to make it accessible to everyone. Doing this means that the same live links you can throw into your PowerPoint, for example, can now double as a nice piece of office art—art that allows you to understand your KPIs in a glance and ensure your team is on the same page.

All you need to do to get your KPIs up on the wall is connect your dashboard with any wireless HDMI device.

What’s awesome is that because your dashboard can update automatically, there is no scramble to be prepared for big conversations. You’re always in the know.

This sharing capability is also super helpful for project management. When you have a big team it can be difficult to keep up with everyone's day-to-day. But with a TV dashboard you can move your project management out of Excel and on to a wall in your department so everyone is aligned and working on what's most important.
