Klipfolio was founded back in 2001 to tackle the challenges of real-time data. Back then, our focus was on using emerging internet technologies like RSS and XML to automate and consolidate data from a huge range of services. Since then the technology has evolved, but our goal remains the same – we just have many more tools at our disposal.
We're proud of our rich history and how we've evolved over the years. Use this nifty chart to see the story of Klipfolio.
Back in 2001, internet technologies like RSS and XML were still relatively new. Allan and Peter recognized through their own web-browsing habits that people were checking into the same web service multiple times a day to retrieve very similar data sets, such as weather reports or commodity prices. Their idea was to use RSS and XML to automate data retrieval and then consolidate all that data on an interactive dashboard.
James Scott joins the team
Allan and Peter knew what they wanted to accomplish, but they needed a developer to help bring their vision to life. Enter James Scott, a young developer with an eye for innovation and strong understanding of emerging web technologies. Their team now complete, the trio began working on the first iteration of Klipfolio Dashboard.
Klipfolio 1.0 enters beta
The rubber officially hit the road in December 2001 when the trio started beta testing for version 1.0 Klipfolio Dashboard. The initial response to the beta was very positive, and the team felt relieved that their startup was on the right track.

Version 1 goes public

Version 2 gets customizable
Following up on the success of version 1 of Klipfolio Dashboard, the team continued to develop and improve on their original design. Version 2.0, first launched in late 2002, introduced key customization options such as tooltip pop-ups.
Early testing on mobile devices
Keen to test new technologies and display options, the development team at Klipfolio began early testing on Windows mobile devices. Unsatisfied with the functionality of mobile phones (at the time), the team put mobile testing on hold until 2009.
Launched with Klipfolio Dashboard version 1.0, KlipFarm grew rapidly throughout 2003 and 2004 to include a community of thousands of Klip builders and tens of thousands of Klips. This popular and vibrant community was the embodiment of Klipfolio Personal Dashboard until it was eventually shut down in 2008.
Version 3 of Klipfolio
The launch of Klipfolio version 3 put the focus on Klips and information visibility. The L-shaped toolbar, which had defined version's 1 and 2 was abandoned in favour of a cleaner, simpler toolbar.
Easy Button campaign
Klipfolio's work on branded application (aka Rich Internet Applications) was marked by serveral key wins. Chief among those was Klipfolio's contribution to Staples' Easy Button campaign.
Version 4 of Klipfolio
Klipfolio Dashboard 4.0 was the company's most feature-rich offering to date. The sleek design and simple presentation demonstrated the maturity of the team as well as foreshadowed a shift away from the consumer market to enterprise performance management.
