From Diagnostics to the Future of Radiology Reporting

With a disciplined SQL Server data mart in place, SMIL needed a fast, beautiful way to deliver the last mile of reporting on any screen. Director of Business Intelligence Andrew Willy championed Klips, giving every role the same polished view on desktop and phone, raising confidence in daily decisions.

Use Case

Universal Presentation Layer

SMIL’s six-person BI and software team already had trusted data: a history of sophisticated analytics that stretched back to 2007, placing them ahead of the curve in healthcare. The only remaining gap was a universal presentation layer. Andrew Willy, the Director of Business Intelligence, was looking for a lightweight, affordable tool that was aesthetic and functional, and worked identically on desktop and mobile devices. Finding Klips closed that “last mile” quickly and affordably. It transformed SMIL’s curated SQL tables and existing data models into branded, high-impact dashboards. Widely adopted from the start, these dashboards quickly became the visual backdrop projected in boardrooms for external partner presentations, and the source of essential metrics for frontline teams tracking KPIs on mobile devices.

Introducing Southwest Medical Imaging

Southwest Medical Imaging (SMIL) is a distinguished, physician-led radiology group headquartered in Scottsdale, Arizona. With approximately 700 employees, the physician-owned organization has dedicated over 40 years to pairing clinical excellence with advanced technology and research.

Their core mission is simple: Patient care drives business decisions, not the other way around.

Klips Customer Story Smil

The internal BI group supports critical functions across the organization, providing reporting and business automation for executives, managers, and staff.

Bridging Data Sophistication and User Adoption

SMIL had a highly sophisticated BI setup with strong back-end data infrastructure and deep analytical capability. Despite this maturity, the team identified two important gaps in the user-facing layer:

Aesthetics and Speed: Leaders wanted a presentation layer purpose-built for at-a-glance consumption, visually polished and optimized for quick, daily checks rather than deep analytical dives.

Mobile Efficiency: Managers and executives needed seamless access to KPIs on the go: a native mobile experience, not a desktop view adapted for a smaller screen.

“The zero-compromise switch from desktop to mobile is a huge advantage.”

Andrew set a clear, non-negotiable bar: one build that looked sharp, loaded fast, and worked identically on any device, whether desktop or phone. The goal wasn’t to replace their back-end data warehouse or ETL; it was to add an agile, modern front end that could meet every user where they are.

The Klips Solution: A Responsive, Data-Agnostic Front End

After an intensive search, Andrew discovered Klips. Not only was it an immediate fit, his team was able to trial the solution right away, easily and affordably, without a major sales lift. Their integration strategy quickly demonstrated Klips’ flexibility and speed:

Fast Integration: The team started by surfacing existing reports via CSV files, then quickly connected Klips directly to the curated SQL Server data mart. This hybrid approach allowed them to move fast, test ideas, and avoid major changes to their existing data infrastructure.

Rapid Deployment: The team built out a broad library of useful dashboards spanning strategic and operational needs, from finance pacing views comparing actuals vs. projections, to near real-time call center metrics, daily patient volume, and revenue cycle tracking. Since going live, SMIL has developed over 80 individual Klips.

“We knew it was the right fit immediately. It was easy to integrate existing reports via CSV, significantly reducing the lift to get online.”

Internal Success That Speaks for Itself

For SMIL, Klips is an internal win first. It provides a shared, branded front end that allows every SMIL stakeholder to see the same trusted, curated data story, empowering them to act faster and with greater confidence. This visual sophistication has also made a meaningful impact on external relationships.

“Our executives report that outside partners are ‘blown away’ by the quality of what our team has created.”

Being able to tell SMIL’s story clearly and compellingly, backed by clean, visual data, strengthens partner relationships and helps move business forward. When every meeting starts with the same polished, trustworthy view of performance, conversations shift from questions about the numbers to decisions about what to do next.

What began as a gap-filling exercise has evolved into a showcase of what a disciplined, well-resourced BI team can produce. The dashboards that run on Klips today are not just operational tools; they are a statement about SMIL’s commitment to data-driven leadership at every level of the organization.

Looking Ahead

SMIL’s experience with Klips validates both the quality of their internal BI program and Klips’ role as its presentation engine. With a robust, trusted, and visually impressive foundation in place, the team is well-positioned to continue raising the bar on data visibility across their own organization and potentially for the broader healthcare community.

Klipfolio Klips has proven its flexibility, affordability, and power to scale. SMIL’s story is a compelling example of what becomes possible when the right front end meets the right data.
