Supply Chain KPI Example - Order Tracking Metric

Overview

Order Tracking metrics monitor the status and accuracy of orders that are being shipped to your customers. This visualization displays a number of key metrics on a regional map like order accuracy, shipment department and arrival times, and the number of units shipped to each region. Tracking metrics should be tracked in real time to allow your team to respond to developing situations and notify customers of any issues before they notify you of issues.

Key terms

  • Order accuracy: The percentage of orders that are shipped without incident (see "Perfect Order Rate").

Success indicators

  • A high order accuracy rate, which also includes on time deliveries.

Monitoring Supply Chain KPIs on a Dashboard

Once you have established benchmarks and targets for Order Tracking, you’ll want to establish processes for monitoring this and other supply chain KPIs. Dashboards can be critical in this regard. Read more

Why this KPI matters

Clear tracking reduces “Where is my order?” contacts, cuts re-ship costs, and lifts satisfaction. It also exposes carrier issues and bottlenecks in your pick-pack process.

Events to track

  • Picked, packed, shipped. Time from order creation to hand-off.
  • In transit milestones. Departed hub, out for delivery, delivery attempt, delivered.
  • Exceptions. Weather, address issues, customs holds.

How to calculate core measures

  • On-time delivery rate. Delivered by promised date / total delivered.
  • Tracking availability. Orders with valid tracking / total shipped.
  • Days in transit. Delivered date minus ship date.

Data you need

  • Order and shipment tables with promised and actual dates
  • Carrier tracking events
  • Customer contacts tagged “order status”

Track order tracking in Klips

  1. Connect OMS/WMS and carriers. Pull shipments and tracking events.
  2. Model calculations. Compute tracking availability, on-time rate, and days in transit by lane.
  3. Visualize. A gauge for on-time rate, a map by region, and a trend for days in transit.
  4. Set thresholds. Colour rules flag lanes below target, with notes for incidents.
  5. Share. Send a daily snapshot to operations and support.

Common pitfalls

  • Dirty addresses. Bad address data creates false delays. Validate upstream.
  • Missing promised dates. Without promises, you cannot evaluate performance.
  • Single-carrier view. Compare carriers by lane to see true performance.
