Channel Margin
Measure the profit margin your business earns through each sales channel, expressed as a dollar amount or percentage of channel revenue.
Channel Margin by sales channel
| Channel | Revenue | Margin | Margin % |
|---|---|---|---|
| E-commerce | $500,000 | $360,000 | 72% |
| Direct sales | $420,000 | $310,000 | 74% |
| Retail | $380,000 | $247,000 | 65% |
| Distribution | $290,000 | $174,000 | 60% |
| All channels | $1,590,000 | $1,091,000 | 69% |
Channel Margin is the profit margin your business earns through a specific sales channel, expressed as a dollar amount or percentage of revenue generated by that channel.
Tracking Channel Margin tells you which channels are actually profitable, not just which ones generate the most revenue. A channel with high sales volume but thin margins may be costing you more than it returns.
What is Channel Margin?
Channel Margin measures the margin achieved across each of your operating sales channels, such as direct sales, retail, e-commerce, or distribution partners.
It answers a straightforward question: after accounting for the costs tied to a specific channel, how much profit remains?
Why Channel Margin matters
Revenue alone does not tell you whether a sales channel is worth the investment. Channel Margin adds the missing context.
- Profitability by channel: You see which channels contribute most to the bottom line, not just which ones move the most product.
- Resource allocation: Channels with strong margins deserve more investment. Channels with weak margins need scrutiny before you commit more budget.
- Pricing and cost control: A declining Channel Margin signals that costs are rising, pricing is too low, or both.
- Strategic decisions: When you are deciding whether to expand, cut, or renegotiate a channel relationship, margin data makes the case clearly.
How to calculate Channel Margin
Channel Margin = Channel Revenue - Channel Costs
Channel costs include everything directly attributable to that channel: cost of goods sold, channel-specific marketing spend, distributor fees, commissions, fulfilment costs, and any dedicated headcount.
Example:
Your e-commerce channel generates $500,000 in revenue. After accounting for platform fees, fulfilment, paid acquisition, and returns, total channel costs come to $140,000.
Channel Margin = $500,000 - $140,000 = $360,000
You can also express Channel Margin as a percentage:
Channel Margin % = (Channel Margin / Channel Revenue) × 100
Channel Margin % = ($360,000 / $500,000) × 100 = 72%
Reporting frequency
Monitor Channel Margin monthly. Monthly tracking gives you enough data to spot trends without reacting to short-term noise. If your business runs high-volume channels with fast-moving costs, a more frequent review cadence may be warranted.
Channel Margin targets
A healthy Channel Margin depends on your industry, channel type, and cost structure. As a starting point, set a target based on your blended margin across all channels, then benchmark each channel against that figure.
Example KPI target: $360,000 margin per channel per month.
If a channel consistently falls below your target, investigate whether the issue is pricing, cost structure, or channel fit before deciding to scale back or exit.
Variations
- Average Channel Margin across multiple channels: Useful when you want a single benchmark to compare against individual channel performance.
- Channel Margin %: Normalizes margin across channels of different sizes, making comparisons more meaningful.
- Channel Margin by product line: Breaks margin down further to show which products perform best in which channels.
Who tracks Channel Margin
Channel Margin is most relevant to Sales Managers, VPs of Sales, and C-level leaders who are responsible for channel strategy and resource allocation. Finance teams use it alongside other margin metrics to assess overall business profitability.
