Overview

Product Views per Session measures the average number of product detail pages (PDPs) a shopper views in a single visit. Use consistent tracking: count PDP views, not collection or category pages, unless you define them as product views.

Why this matters

  • Signals shopping intent: More PDP views often mean deeper exploration of your catalog.
  • Surfaces UX issues: Very low views can point to poor navigation, weak search, or slow pages.
  • Improves merchandising calls: Pair with conversion rate to see if browsers are converting or just bouncing.

Formula

Total product page views in period ÷ Total sessions in period

How to calculate it

  1. Filter to sessions in the chosen period.
  2. Count views of PDP templates only.
  3. Divide PDP views by total sessions.

Tip: Exclude obvious bots and prefetch traffic. If you use infinite scroll, ensure product impressions are not miscounted as page views.

Example

Your store records 12,400 PDP views across 3,500 sessions in April. Product Views per Session = 12,400 ÷ 3,500 = 3.54.
