Frequently Asked Questions

PowerMetrics is a self-serve metrics platform (ingestion, definition, catalog, viz/analytics, API) that unlocks user consumption SSOT value in the modern data stack. It helps data engineers and analysts unlock the value in their data by delivering metrics to business users in PowerMetrics with a metric catalog and built-in, streamlined metric-centric analytics.

Yes. PowerMetrics is one of two Klipfolio products. The other Klipfolio product is Klips, a powerful tool for creating custom dashboards from raw data. Klips is specifically targeted toward client reporting.

The simplest answer to this question is both! PowerMetrics enables everyone in the organization to work with central, trusted metrics, curated by the data team. Data engineers will enjoy digging into custom metrics, data ingestion processes and metric definitions, while non-technical users can access the metric catalog, add instant metrics and build calculated metrics and dashboards independently - no technical support required.

A metric catalog lists and organizes a company's metrics. Access rights and permissions govern which users can view and/or edit which metrics. Using a metric catalog reduces data duplication, helping avoid inconsistencies across different metric users. This, in turn, makes metric governance more secure.

PowerMetrics stores metric data using a tailor-made solution. Amazon Web Services is used to store and manage Customer Information and Processed Data in and from Canada and to back up Customer Information and Processed Data in Ireland. As indicated in our privacy statement, Klipfolio uses service providers outside of Canada to store and manage the certain data and analytics associated with use of the Services. Read the privacy statement.

We care deeply about the availability, confidentiality, and integrity of your data. Your continued trust in us is our top priority. Read more about how we protect your data.

Yes. With PowerMetrics, you can create metrics from a wide range of data sources. No matter how metrics are created, they’re compatible with each other and can be combined for unlimited analyses. See all PowerMetrics integrations.

Much like PowerMetrics, dbt metrics evolve over time as new data is added to the database or the dbt metric definition is updated. These changes need to be reflected in PowerMetrics to ensure that metric consumers are working with the latest version of the data.

Data changes happen in dbt when a transformation is run on the latest data. A webhook can be set up in dbt to notify downstream systems that there's new data to consume. PowerMetrics can expose a webhook url for each dbt integration. The webhook url can be called to allow PowerMetrics to be notified when a dbt metric's data has changed. PowerMetrics then updates the metadata it has for the metric, clears cached queries, and notifies the UI to update its state and get the latest data for the changed metrics. We use a similar process when refreshing data feeds in PowerMetrics.

If a metric definition in dbt is changed, the corresponding metric definition in PowerMetrics will be updated to match. When this occurs it will be possible to refresh the PowerMetrics metric definition through the edit metric page.

Yes. You can create metrics from data and from calculations based on other metrics. PowerMetrics is designed with a rich set of features that are optimized to get the most from your metrics, regardless of whether they're dbt metrics or metrics built with data from other services. underlying metric type. dbt metrics are a natural fit within the PowerMetrics experience and can be combined as calculated metrics either with other dbt metrics or with metrics you create from additional data sources. Using a well-defined metrics framework supports faster, more reliable decision making. Metrics abstract the business concept from the abundance of raw data. Their consistent structure allows for effective data monitoring over time and increased awareness of change. What the metric measures and how the data is processed is carefully considered and agreed upon by the organization. As such, metrics represent not just clean data, but also deeply meaningful and understood information. Read more about the value of metrics in decision making.
